UNITED NATIONS – HE FOR SHE
HeForShe, the UN Women gender equality campaign, originally launched in 2013. It did not gain the traction it deserved. UN Women approached us to help them rebrand the relaunch. It needed to be symbolic and powerful enough to evoke change.
Gender equality is not only a women’s issue, it is a human issue. UN Women’s HeForShe solidarity movement brings together one half of humanity in support of the other half of humanity for the benefit of all. We needed to create a mark that could live beyond language. The HeForShe logo mark represents this solidarity movement by joining together aspects of both the female and male symbols. This union symbolizes women and men working together to make gender equality a reality. This mark does not favor the male or female symbol, but blends them together creating a new symbol for humanity and gender equality. Overall, the identity communicates with shared masculine and feminine sensibilities.
HeForShe has had an remarkable impact. A day after the launch over 100k supporters took an online commitment to prevent violence and discrimination against women, a number that included one man from every single country in the world. The HeForShe movement has had a significant impact in the corporate sector as well. UN Women has partnered with companies that have agreed to be “champions,” committing to make gender equality an institutional priority. It promoted over a billion conversations on social media, most of which shared the mark either recreated or pulled from the site. Twitter has even created a HeForShe emoji.
